Whether you’re a chronic upcycler, a professional refurbisher, an inspirational creative, or a DIY addict, finding cool ways to turn the old into something new is always fun. Upcycling items and DIY projects are great ways to update your home and bring in extra cash by selling your spares. Here are 10 awesome ways to upcycle the most unlikely items into amazing DIY chairs.
1 – Hombre Festive Chair
Have a holiday party coming up? Want a touch of eccentric elegance around your home? Then you definitely need to make a hombre festive chair. Take a plain white chair and 5 – 7 different colored ribbons (1/4 inch thick.) Tightly tie each strip of ribbon around the chair, leaving a knot and a few inches of extra ribbon on the back (do about 5 of each color.) Soon you will have a cascading hombre chair perfect for any occasion.
2 – Writing Throne
Next time you find a broken down stand, wardrobe or chest of drawers, you can turn it into your own personal writing throne. Simply take the insides and top off so that you are left with a tall back and sides. Add some plush seating and line the rest of the inside with a nice fabric or finish. Add shelving above your head and maybe even a few small desk drawers. Now you have your own customized writing throne.
3 – Wicker Rehab
Find an unwanted wicker chair in need of some TLC. Next time you spot one of these, snatch it up because you can easily turn it into something beautiful and all you need is a spray paint and some yarn. First, spray paint the chair a fun and vibrant color. Then, accent it with 3 – 5 spools of yarn. Wrap the yarn in pretty designs around the outside and supporting “beams”. Finish the chair off with pom poms dangling from a yarn braid.
4 – Moss Chair
Ever think “there’s nothing I can do, the chair is too broken?” Make the moss chair by simply tightening netting or plastic sheets to the back and bottom. Cover it with faux moss and add some plants. You now have a fun and funky plant holder for your indoor or outdoor garden. You can also use an old bicycle, another great DIY upcycling plant holder idea.
5 – Bookshelf Chair
Do you have an old chair that needs some new life? Consider making it into a bookshelf chair. Choose a chair that has a square shape. Next, reupholster and add shelving to the sides and front of the chair. This is a great space saver and it is a fun way to display your books, relax and read.
6 – Wooden Pallet Lounger
Old wood pallets and robes can be altered and transformed into a comfy and creative lounger. First, paint or polish the wood before assembling. Then, add a pop of color with your favorite, durable nylon ropes; this will help the lounger keep its shape and provide arm support. For extra comfort, add a few pillows to your lounger.
7 – Macramé Lawn Chair
Have a tattered lawn chair in your garage? Using a craft cord, you can rethread it. Using the macramé method (form of textile produced using knotting), you can create unique and fun, funky designs that will add a pop of life and comfort to any outdoor event you attend. This is a fun way to personalize a set for the whole family.
8 – Suitcase Chair
A suitcase chair is a great idea if you love to travel or if you want to add an eclectic piece to your home. Find a sturdy suitcase that is large enough for you to sit on. Open the suitcase and add seating support or pillows. Do the same for the back and add legs to complete your chair.
9 – Car Scrap Bench
Use scrap auto parts to make a bench for a perfect antique look. For example, use an old tailgate from a pick up for the back or license plates for the armrests. Use finished wood for the seating and legs. Add a thin but comfy cushion and a couple of throw pillows if you want to use your bench indoors.
10 – Dog Bowls
Did you know that placing a dog’s bowl on the ground is actually bad for them? Next time you find a couple of short benches or chairs, simply cut a hole out for a bowl. Decorate the chair with your pup’s favorite themes. Make sure the chair is at the appropriate height so your dog can easily reach it. This is a cute way to keep your dog happy while adding some extra style to your home.
