You probably associate Long Island with New York City, but the island is also home to state parks, whaling towns, and many lighthouses. Long Island Sound has been notorious for centuries as a dangerous area for sailors. The sound is full of jagged rocks and hidden shoals that endanger sailing to this day. As a result, over 30 lighthouses have been built on Long Island, and although some have been demolished, Suffolk County still has more lighthouses than any other county in the US. Saturday, June 2nd- 11 am (check in on Mallory Square.) The boats return at 5 p.m. Catch a ferry out of Sayville and spend a day onboard “Terry’s Ferry,” cruising the Great South Bay with stops at Sailors Haven and Cherry Grove on Fire Island. At Sailors Haven you’ll enjoy a clambake on the beach with baked clams, shrimp scampi, wine and beer, music, drinks and a scavenger hunt for prizes. A re-enactment over the Fire Island Lighthouse of the original “Flying Santa,” which took place in the late 1940s, continues. There are no reindeer. Look for Santa’s biplane to circle the historic beacon, just like he did to deliver presents to the lighthouse keeper and his family back in the day, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, Robert Moses State Park, park in Field 5 and walk east.
