Taking a cue straight from the fall fashion runways, take your fall makeup routine to an entirely new level. Fall 2017 is all about individuality and self-expression and makeup trends are make a statement all their own. Bold new looks and trendy techniques give you all the tools you need to create your own fun new look.

This year’s trends marry some of the fall classics, like colorful eyeshadows and dark lips, with some unexpected new trends, like drawn-on lower lashes and two-toned lip colors. A technique called “beet lips” turned heads on the runways this fall, as did color-blocked eyeshadows. Here’s a rundown of some of the hottest trends for fall that you may want to check out for yourself.

Deep Bold Lips

Every year, fall brings a collection of deep, vampy lip colors. This year is no exception, with ruby red lips dominating as always. A deep red can be brightened up by dabbing a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover in the center of the lips to create a slight ombre effect. Deep plums, berries and purples can be tweaked in the same way for a stunning fall look.

Powder Blue Lids

Powder blue is making a bold comeback this season. A soft or bold palette can be created with a standard powder blue shadow or by mixing several pigments to create a unique diffused look. Customize the look even further with a pop of bright eyeliner on the top lids in a contrasting shade such as fuchsia or plum.

Eyeliner Art

There are so many ways to customize your eyeliner routine. Whether it’s bold and dramatic or soft and subtle, eyeliner can define a look. Several trends showed up on the runway this fall. One of the boldest of those looks is “floating eyeliner” in a bright color, in which graphic shapes are drawn on above the lid crease. Another hot look involves a technique previously considered a no-no in the cosmetics world, black liner all the way around your eyes. This look is turned into a smoky eye by blending the liner upward until it touches the wing. Another way to break up the harshness of all around eyeliner is to add some pale pearlescent liner on top of the black for a few centimeters around each eye. Sharp wings drawn on with liquid liner also took center stage, creating beautifully dramatic eye effects.

Two-tone Technique

From the eyes to the lips, two-tone technique is huge right now. For a dramatically different lip style, apply contrasting or complementary hues to the top and bottom lips create a signature flair. Or apply a deep vampy shade, like violet, all over, then dab a lighter, brighter shade in the center and smudge outward for a chic ombre look. In one of the most unique lip effects seen so far this year, the so-called “beet lips” are created by dabbing wine-colored lipstick just in the center of the lips and smudging outward, creating the look of having just eaten a beet. The same effects can be mimicked on the eyes by blending two complementary colors for an ombre look or by applying different colors below and above the crease of the lids. If you pair this technique with the pastel color trend, you can create a look as beautifully unique as you.

Go for the Metals

Even though it was considered the defining look for the pre-teen crowd, metallic shades have gotten a grown-up makeover. These shimmery shades can be used in a variety of ways to create different effects. For a touch of metallic accent, a neat application beneath the lower lash line can be complemented with heavy mascara. Gold shadow creates on a subtle metallic look when applied across the crease of the lids or bold it up by sweeping over entire lid.

Gloss for the Eyes

Building on the shimmery trend of metallics, eye gloss is seeing a revival. Glossy lids are all over the place. If you don’t have an actual eye gloss, the same effect can be created with metallic lip gloss over neutral shadow. Or forego the shadow altogether and blend clear lip gloss over the lid to get your glow on. Pair that with feathery full false lashes on the top for a dramatic look that will not soon be forgotten.

Color-Blocked Eyelids

Bold colors or patterned color-blocks abound, the possibilities with this technique are endless. While some of the looks will stay firmly on the runway, there are many ways to translate this effect to everyday routines.

New Take on Black

Black eyeliners and shadows have always been a mainstay in the makeup world. Makeup artists are spicing it up a little bit by using classic black in new ways. Embrace imperfect lines and breaking the hard and fast rule can create some truly unique looks to fit your individual personality.

Play Up Those Bottom Lashes

One of the more unique trends is drawing on feathery lower lashes for a slightly twisted effect. Adding falsies to the bottom lashes is also a trend that is rapidly on the rise. Pair that with a waterproof, smudge-proof mascara designed specifically for lower lashes and watch those lower lashes pop into full view.

90s Grunge is Back

Like it or not, the 90s are making a comeback in a big way. Lipsticks in every shade of brown, mauves and smudgy black eyeliner are reminiscent of the 90s grunge look. Ditch the lip liner in favor of a smudged lipsticks and gloss for a sexy imperfect look. Apply blush to make it look like your cheeks are reddened by the wind and cold weather. Grab those ripped leggings, a band t-shirt and some combat boots and embrace the 90s grunge throwback.

However you choose to express your makeup personality, fall 2017 is offering up some of the hottest makeup looks that you will want to try.
