8 Storage Solutions for Your Kids’ Bedrooms

Your kids’ bedrooms should be comfortable and relaxing places for them to play, study, and sleep. However, if their rooms are just a jumble of clutter, they can become more of a spot filled with tension and angst. Kids have a lot of stuff, and keeping it organized and off the floor can seem like a monumental task, but having the proper storage solutions can help. Here are eight great storage options to make any child’s room a more delightful place to grow.

1.Loft Beds
Loft beds can be a great option when you have vertical space but not a lot of square footage. Beds often come with built in desks, shelves, and drawers underneath that can serve as a great study area especially for an older child or teenager. If the bed doesn’t already come with them, you can add your own accessories.

2.Under the bed storage
If a loft bed isn’t an option because of the dimensions of the room or the size of your child, under-the-bed storage is another terrific solution. You can find many different styles such as large boxes made of cloth or plastic, divided bins, space-saver bags, and more. These can be used to hold toys your kids no longer play with, off-season clothes, shoes, etc. This type of storage is best used for those items that are necessary to keep, but aren’t needed on a daily basis.

3.Corner nets
Many kids have heaps of stuffed animals and no where to put them. One great storage solution for this is to hang nets from the corners of the ceiling. These stuffed animal nets gets soft toys up off the floor and also make a fun decoration in the room. If your kids are unable to reach the nets, you can simply switch out the animals from time to time with other animals that are within reach. This is also a great way to ensure that all the animals get equal play time.

4.Toy bins
Toy bins come in many different styles and colors. You can even get them decorated with your child’s favorite cartoon characters or other kid-friendly themes. One of the best type of toy bins for storage is the nine-bin shelf unit. Each shelf holds three removable bins. This makes a great place to keep smaller toys that go together. For example, your kids might want to keep all their cars in one bin and all their blocks in another. An added benefit is that you can simply remove a bin of toys if you want to play somewhere else, and the clean-up is a breeze.

5.Hanging shelves
If your child’s bedroom contains a large closet with excessive hanging room, a closet hanging organizer might be a great idea. These organizers come in either cloth or plastic and attach, normally via Velcro, to the closet rod. They become a small shelving unit inside the closet. Each hanging organizer usually has about four or five shelves, and although you wouldn’t want to put a ton of weight on them, they’re perfect for items such as socks and underwear, t-shirts, and extra sheets and blankets.

6.Over-the-door organizers
Over-the-door organizers are often marketed as a place to store shoes. They have several plastic pockets that hang from hooks that go over the top of the door. However, these organizers have many other uses as well. They’re wonderful for storing hair accessories for example. Your child can even sort her headbands and barrettes by color and occasion and put each type in a separate pocket. Another way to use an over-the-door organizer is for art supplies. The plastic pockets are great for holding pencils, crayons, scissors, paint brushes, etc.

7.Tall, narrow shelves
Kids’ bedrooms can fill up with furniture fast. So it’s important to use the vertical space in the room to your advantage. Consider tall, narrow pieces such as bookshelves to get the most out of the area you have. Books that your child reads frequently can be located on the bottom shelves, and those that are less frequently read can be stored nearer the top. High shelves are also a great place to store items that you do not want your child to have without supervision. This is especially true if you have a toddler or preschooler who has things you’d rather he or she not access alone. Just make sure that you set clear boundaries about not climbing the shelves.

8.Peg boards
Many people assume that peg boards are only for places like workshops and garages, but this is not the case. They can be fantastic storage solutions in a kid’s bedroom as well. Hang a peg board with a variety of hooks that can be moved around to fit your child’s needs at any given time. Then hang different sizes of reusable bags from the hooks where you can store lots of different things. You might have one bag for hats and gloves, for example, and another for swimsuits and goggles. You might also want to store toys in these bags so that your child can grab one and go at a moment’s notice. This solution also has the advantage of being able to be tailored to your child’s particular interests by the different colors and styles of bags that you choose.

Whichever storage solutions you like, make sure your kids’ bedrooms fit their particular style and needs. Feel free to incorporate storage pieces into the room’s decor and create a functional and fun place where your child can relax and play.
