Meet frogs and toads and learn how they move catch food, and survive cold winters. Kids can make their own frog with light-up eyes using a mix of origami and electronics. (Targeted for ages 8 and up)

The Nature Center at Jones Beach State Park hosts a Marine Mammal Festival, where you can learn about seals, whales, porpoises and other mammals found on Long Island and in its waters. Enjoy a free seal walk in hopes of catching one of the mammals in its natural habitat.
See beautiful winged wonders up close at the butterfly garden at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. This garden has 10 to 15 varieties of butterflies and is open 10 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through mid-September, depending on the weather.

Outdoor activities include crafting nature boxes and pinecone feeders, nature scavenger hunts, hiking the trails, gardening, and maintaining bird-feeding stations. Indoor activities include examining birds’ nests and feather displays and special presentations on subjects such as the Northern Bobwhite Quail, local marine creatures, and bird watching.
Fall colors will be waning during the Wertheim Wanderings hike at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. This 5-mile walk (hikers can drop out at a 3-mile point) is organized by the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference and takes hikers near the bay, a tidal river, freshwater streams, ponds, a salt marsh and more. Meet at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (360 Smith Rd.) in Shirley.
