The Origins of St.
Patrick’s Day
Contributed by Helena Bishop,
Owner of Grafton Street Irish Pub, Hauppauge
and The Auld Triangle Irish Pub, Hauppauge NY
The image of St. Patrick’s Day as a
pub-fi lled, Guinness-soaked party
grew stronger after:
• Pub restrictions were lifted in the 1970s.
• Tourism campaigns promoted Ireland
as festive and welcoming.
• The global popularity of Irish culture
increased.
Today, Irish pubs —
both in Ireland and
worldwide — are
central to the celebration.
What to Expect:
• Traditional music
sessions
• Dancing
• Plenty of stout (especially Guinness!)
• Lots of green attire
How did St. Patrick’s Day
Become a Big Celebration?
Interestingly, the large parades associated with
St. Patrick’s Day began in the United States,
organized by Irish immigrants in cities like:
• New York City and Boston
Ireland itself only began hosting major modern
festivals in the 20th century. Today, the
largest celebration happens in:
• Dublin, which holds a multi-day festival with
parades, concerts, and cultural events.
So stop in at Grafton’s Street Pub,
1261 Vets Memorial Hwy, Hauppauge, NY
or The Auld Triangle Irish Pub, 690 Motor
Pkwy, Hauppauge NY to experience the
true meaning of St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday
March 17, 2026 and enjoy a traditional Corn
Beef & Cabbage lunch or dinner!
