BAY FRIENDLY
YARD TIP:
BE WISE,
DON’T FERTILIZE!
Eco-Friendly Alternatives
to Using Fertilizers
Fertilizer runoff from
our yards is one of the
leading causes of nitrogen
loading in the Great
South Bay. Th ese nitrogen
based fertilizers fuel eutrophication—
a process that
leads to harmful algal blooms,
fi sh kills, and overall ecosystem
decline. Fertilizer runoff is among the most serious
threats to the Bay’s health.
Th e good news? You can maintain a lush, vibrant
yard without harming the environment. Here are fi ve
eco-friendly ways to nourish your garden and protect our
Bay:
1. Fill Your Yard with Native Plants
Native plants are adapted to thrive in our local climate
and soils, requiring little to no fertilizer to look their best.
2. Use a Mulching Mower
Grass clippings left by mulching mowers break down
quickly, naturally returning nutrients to the soil and improving
its quality.
3. Keep the Clover
Clover is a nitrogen-fi xing plant that enhances soil health
and keeps your lawn naturally fertilized. Plus, it adds biodiversity
and resilience.
4. Plant Legumes
Legumes, such as the native Eastern Redbud, naturally
add nitrogen to the soil. Avoid invasive varieties like Kudzu
and Wisteria.
5. Start a Compost Pile
Composting enriches your soil with nutrient-dense organic
matter, helping your garden fl ourish—naturally.
