4 EVERYDAY WAYS
TO KEEP YOUR
BRAIN SHARP
Family Features
Staying in
shape goes
beyond
physical fitness
- keeping your
brain health top
of mind is crucial
for your overall
well-being, too.
To sharpen your
mind, consider
these everyday ways for prioritizing brain health.
Stimulate Your Mind
While “exercising” typically refers to running, walking
or biking, remember you can give your brain a workout
as well. Provide a boost for your brain with easy and
enjoyable activities like reading, puzzles, math games
like sudoku or artistic challenges such as drawing or
crafting.
Eat Healthy Foods
Establishing a strong foundation for brain health can
start in the kitchen by preparing healthy foods. Adding
whole grains, fish, legumes, healthy fats and fruits and
vegetables, including grapes and leafy greens, can encourage
better brain wellness.
Prioritize Mental Health
Reducing anxiety may be easier said than done, but it
starts with healthy everyday habits. Practice mindfulness
by meditating or simply turning off distractions
like social media. Get outside for fresh air or find a
hobby you enjoy. Join a support group, reach out to
loved ones and, if you feel you’re experiencing negative
mental health systems, talk with a mental health professional.
Exercise Regularly
Physical activities that increase your heart rate also
increase blood flow to the brain and throughout your
body. It doesn’t have to be rigorous or strenuous - go for
a walk around the neighborhood, dance in the living
room, tend to your garden or enjoy a bike ride when
the weather cooperates. Remember to replenish your
energy and hydration - California grapes are an easy
way to deliver both.

PAZO DAS BRUXAS ALBARINO
Spain. Spanish legend has it that witches, known as
“Bruxas” would conjure up the spirits in vineyards to
strengthen up the vines and help produce the highest
quality. The Albarino grapes featured in the tasty and
elegant Spanish treat certainly have been perfectly
enchanted here! It starts with a light and bright color in
the glass, with a very subtle nose which only serves to
intrigue the senses. Then the crisp pear and lively stone
fruit body defi nitely hit the palate in the most refi ned
manner, and are followed by a long-lasting mineral
fi nish to make this a super-satisfying glass of wine.
“Fair is foul and foul is fair...with poultry or seafood,
this wine makes a perfect pair”! Mark S.

New Zealand. Bright, zesty and refreshingly delicious,
Frenzy is a blend of wines from different vineyards in
the famous Marlborough Region. It is intensely aromatic
and of course boasts the telltale fl avors of grapefruit
and lime that all great New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs
have. Because of this delicious fruit and vibrancy it is
easy to drink this fairly full-bodied dry white by itself,
but a great match with seafood, chicken and pork too.
As it says on the label: Drink up the Frenzy! Mike H.

CHATEAU MONTFORT VOUVRAY
France. This is a very easy drinking, off-dry white that
matches up great with chicken, fi sh and spicy food. The
grape variety in the wine is Chenin Blanc. You’ll fi nd
a lot of fruit, but also acidity to keep it balanced and
refreshing. Hooray for Vouvray. Mike H.

France. From one of the greatest wine making families
in the world, comes this beautiful medium-bodied dry
white. Rieslings are usually thought of as sweet, but this
is vinifi ed with no residual sugar left. You still get all
that great Riesling fruit, but the wine fi nishes dry. Good
match with seafood, chicken, pork and duck. Mike H.

SCHRAMSBERG BLANC DE BLANCS
California. This bubbly out of the North Coast is 100%

FEUDO MONTONI NERO D’AVOLA
Italy. Some of you may recognize this winery because
of their outstanding Rose that I sell and people love.
This Nero is right up there in quality. This full bodied
dry organic red delivers immense satisfaction from
the fi rst sip to the last. Impeccably balanced and
drinking great right now. Lush on the palate with spice,
raspberry and cherries. Honest soulful juice from the
mountains of Sicily. Mike H.

JAMESPORT “EAST END” CABERNET FRANC
Long Island. Local, expressive aromas of bright
red berries mixed with warm spices and a hint of
aromatic herbs jump from your glass. On the palate
it presents a great body with good balance; elegant
tannins and a long and fresh fi nish. When the Long
Island afternoons are nice, this is the glass of wine
you’ll want to sit outside and enjoy. Maria Z.

CASTELLO DI VOLPAIA CHIANTI CLASSICO
Italy. Coming from one of the highest elevations in the
Chianti Classico Region, this medium-full-bodied dry
red is mostly Sangiovese (90%) with a dash of Merlot
(10%). It is aged in very large older wood barrels and
all the vineyards used for the wine are certifi ed organic.
Fermentation in stainless steel and no new oak keeps this
wine fresh and lively. Ruby in color with hints of cherry
and spice. Good round mouthfeel and a long lasting
pleasing fi nish. Match it up with anything from roasted
chicken to pasta with red sauce to hamburgers and pork.

FESS PARKER CHARDONNAY
California. When Fess hung up his hat after playing Davy
Crockett and Daniel Boone in the 50’s and 60’s he moved from
Hollywood up to the Santa Barbara area. Here he eventually
found and purchased a 700 acre ranch and built the Fess Parker
Winery. This iconic winery is still family owned and operated
and producing award winning wines year after year. This fullbodied
fairly lush dry white sees a little bit of oak aging which
imparts a nice touch of vanilla and toasty oak to the wine. That
along with gorgeous Santa Barbara fruit makes for one heck of
a Chardonnay at a very attractive price. Mike H.

PAXIS RED BLEND
Portugal. Here is a great dollar value juicy red blend.
Portugal is the land of value in my opinion. So many great
wines are coming out of there at such low price points.
Paxis is no exception. If you are a fan of red blend wines,
you will love this. Ripe, rich and full bodied. Loaded with
amazing fruit and so easy to drink just by itself. Great wine
for a get together with family and friends. Mike H.

MATCHBOOK CABERNET SAUVIGNON
California. A staff favorite here at the shoppe. Why?
Because it is so good and reasonably priced! It’s a fullbodied
juicy dry red that is very smooth and fl avorful.
Made from almost all Cabernet Sauvignon but there is a
splash of Syrah added to fatten it up a bit. This Cabernet
delivers the goods, plain and simple. You get more than
what you pay for. It’s got tiger blood running through
its veins! Mike H.

CASTLE ROCK RUSSIAN RIVER RESERVE PINOT NOIR
California. While there certainly is a place for Pinot Noir on the
wine spectrum, I personally don’t often gravitate to them - unless
and until something really pulls me in. In reds I am looking for
a little more body, depth and character than many everyday Pinot
Noirs can offer, but the reserve from Castle Rock is a notable step
up! The Russian River Valley in Sonoma County provides perfect
growing climate conditions for the Pinot Noir grape - cool but often
foggy (which has also been used to describe me on occasion).
This results in a heavier bodied Pinot Noir with richer and bolder
fruit and a long-lasting lush fi nish to pair pork, light red meats, or
poultry dishes. Mark S.

7 MOONS RED BLEND
California. This California blend incorporates SEVEN
distinct red grape varietals so it is complex, but not
confusing. The intriguing nose and a dark, inviting color
in the glass draws you in, and then you get rich plum and
cherry notes on the palate. Produces a velvety fi nish in a
solid and satisfying experience. From start to fi nish it does
not disappoint. If you’re wondering what the varietals are
and other vinicultural facts, just repeat to yourself “This
is just a wine review, I should really just relax!” Mark S

MOCALI I PIAGGIONI ROSSO TOSCANO
Italy. This is a nice, little, unknown, smart buy that shouldn’t be
overlooked. Mocali is known for making some incredible Brunello
Di Montalcinos. Though this is not Brunello, this 100% Sangiovese
from Montalcino kind of gets you there for a fraction of the price. It
is a medium - to full-bodied dry red. Well put together, so to speak,
between the fruit, acidity and tannins. A Tuscan Red of balance.
Enjoy with roasted meats and Rocky Mountain oysters. Mike H.

TERREDORA FALANGHINA
Italy. Italians make some gorgeous white wines and this
is the leader of the pack. Delicious citrus notes combined
with delicate fl oral notes balance nicely with the dry,
fresh minerally fi nish. There is a lot on in this bottle that
you can enjoy on its own or with a salad topped with
grilled salmon. Maria Z.
