When one looks at the vast catalog of music composed since medieval times, the number of classical works by women is small. Because of women’s traditional roles in patriarchal society, female composers were generally discouraged. However, the indifference towards performing, publishing, and preserving the works of female composers went the way of the vote. So much of the earlier works are no longer available to us. Nonetheless, much of the music written by women in the various musical periods has survived. The HCS Spring concert program is just a small sample of this rich musical output. The earliest of works date from the 1800’s; the most recent will be getting its premiere performance. Composers include Lilli Boulanger, Amy Beach, Clara Schumann, Gwyneth Walker to name a few and we are proud to add LI’s own Jennifer Tibbets. Come and honor the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment (Women’s Right to Vote) by reveling in the creative gifts of the “fairer” sex.
