Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run
September 8, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

The walk/run was established in order to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Anemia, a life-threatening genetic disorder which targets the body’s red-blood cells.
In a healthy human, red-blood cells are round and smooth. However, in an individual affected with Sickle Cell Anemia, red-blood cells are sickle shaped, making it difficult for these cells to carry oxygen, travel throughout the body, and exchange nutrients and waste materials. Due to this cellular abnormality, individuals diagnosed with this illness live shorter lives while also suffering from a wide range of complications. Unfortunately, to this day, there is no cure.
With the support from community members and organizations, future generations of children suffering with Sickle Cell Anemia may one day find solace in knowing there is a cure.
