Nassau Community College and the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) present a conference, “Lessons from the Holocaust: A New Generation Speaks Truth to Power,” on Friday, May 3, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in CCB 252-53, Nassau Community College.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Mitchell Schwarzer, who will discuss “Across the Abyss: Piecing Together My Father’s Holocaust Story.” Dr. Schwarzer is an architectural historian at California College of the Arts. His keynote address will be about a new invaluable contribution to Holocaust literature, the diary of 17-year old Renia Spiegel, the close companion of Dr. Schwarzer’s father. The journal chronicles their romance against the harsh backdrop of life in Nazi-occupied Poland. Dr. Schwarzer will discuss the impact of their story on his father and family.
There will also be a professional workshop on “The Fragility of Democracy: Then and Now,” facilitated by Kevin Feinberg, Senior Program Director at Facing History and Ourselves. Helen Turner, HMTC’s Director of Youth Education, will take part in a panel on “The Lessons We Learned: Responsibility, Resistance and Respect.”
