A NEW NONPROFIT
SHOWS HOW PEOPLE
CAN ENJOY BALLOONS
WHILE PROTECTING
THE PLANET
Balloons, now more popular than ever, are often
released for celebrations, memorials, and even
gender reveal parties. The sight of bright-colored
balloons fl oating away into the clouds can be uplifting,
but the reality is that what goes up, must come down.
Many people are unaware of the trouble that latex and
foil balloons can cause when they fall on land and sea,
or that there are warning labels on balloons to “weigh
down” and “never release” them. These single-use plastics
pose a signifi cant threat to animals and the environment
and can even spark fi res and cause power outages.
The situation has become so critical that some Towns,
Counties, and States have passed laws banning intentional
balloon releases.
In the face
of this issue,
Balloon Mission,

in the sky. The
organization’s message is simple: “It’s okay to enjoy balloons,
use them responsibly, and never let them go. We
can celebrate and honor our loved ones in eco-friendly
ways like blowing bubbles or planting a tree.”
Since launching in January 2023, Balloon Mission
has messaged to over 16,200 students in grades K-12 in
Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens counties using educational
materials created by its partners at Prevent Balloon Litter.

It’s common knowledge that plastic bags and straws
harm animals and the environment. Most people don’t
know latex balloons are made with plasticizers and
chemicals, so they stay infl ated longer. As labeling is
unregulated, latex balloons are advertised as “environmentally
friendly” and “biodegradable.” Research has
shown latex balloons take years to break down and toxins
leech into the environment. Foil balloons and ribbons
slowly break down into micro and nano plastics.
Balloon Mission is taking a stair-step approach to
sustainability with solutions to keep animals and the environment
safe from these toxic plastics. They’ve pioneered
a balloon collection program to encourage proper
disposal, with over 40 organizations hosting a balloon
bin for people to pop-n-drop defl ated balloons. With the
help of over 150 volunteers from ACDS (adults with developmental
disabilities) almost 45,000 balloon materials
have been collected and safely disposed of. Balloon
Mission is showing that everyone can make a difference
for a greener world.
