Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), a naive business college graduate becomes a mailroom clerk at Hudsucker Industries. where, the company’s founder and president, Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning), commits suicide during a business meeting. Ruthless board member Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman), learning that stock shares will go public; he mounts  a scheme to buy the controlling interest, believing Norville to be an idiot, selects him as a proxy and his seemingly lame-brain invention turns out to be the ever popular hula hoop.
