INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL BY
SUFFOLK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
MAY 6, 2019 THROUGH OCTOBER 25, 2019
The Suffolk County Department of Public Works will apply biological and chemical pesticides as PART of its mosquito control program in Suffolk
County from May 6, 2019 through October 25, 2019.
I. INSECTICIDES USED FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL
Suffolk County Department of Public Works in its mosquito control program uses the following insecticides. The United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) register these insecticides.
LARVICIDES (GROUND AND AERIAL APPLICATION)
AQUABAC 200G (EPA 62637-3, 2.86% Bacillus thuringiensis, subsp. israelensis (Bti) solids, spores and insecticidal toxins); VECTOBAC 12 AS
(EPA Reg. No. 73049-38, 11.61% Bti fermentation solids and solubles); SUMMIT B.t.i. Briquets (EPA Reg. No. 6218-47 10% Bti International Toxicity
Units or 10.31% spores and insecticidal toxins); ALTOSID LIQUID LARVICIDE concentrate (EPA Reg. No. 2724-446, 20% methoprene); ALTOSID
LIQUID LARVICIDE (EPA Reg. No. 2724-392, 5% methoprene); ALTOSID XR briquets (EPA Reg. No. 2724-421, 2.1% methoprene); ALTOSID

ADULTICIDES (GROUND AND AERIAL APPLICATION)
ANVIL 10+10 (EPA 1021-1688-8329, 10% sumithrin, 10% Piperonyl Butoxide); DUET (EPA 1021-1795-8329, 1% prallethrin, 5% sumithrin, 5% Piperonyl
Butoxide). Scourge 18+54 (EPA 432-667). 18% resmethrin, 54% piperonyl butoxide. The EPA Signal Word for all these materials is CAUTION.
II. HEALTH AND SAFETY STATEMENTS
The Suffolk County Department of Public Works uses insecticides safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Their use for
mosquito control does not pose an unreasonable level of risk to the public or to the environment and is permitted by the NYSDEC. The Division
conducts public notifi cation for adult mosquito control and maintains a “no-spray” registry. Information regarding public notice and the registry
may be obtained by contacting the Division at the address and phone number listed below or on the County website. Beekeepers and pesticide
sensitive individuals can also register with the County CodeRED emergency notifi cation system for adult pesticide spray events to receive 24
hour prior notice to the application of these insecticides. Call the Office of Emergency Management: 631-852-4900, Monday-Friday from 9AM-5PM
to register or via the County website.
III. INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE FOLLOWING AREAS ON THE SCHEDULE DESCRIBED BELOW:
WEEKLY AERIAL INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS FOR LARVAL CONTROL
Any aerial applications will be made by North Fork Helicopters, Ltd., P.O. Box 1160, Cutchogue, NY 11935. Altosid (methoprene), Bacillus
sphaericus and/or Bti will be applied aerially 1 to 2 times per week, if needed, to mosquito breeding sites in approximately 100 tidal marsh or other
wetland areas in TOWNS OF BABYLON, ISLIP, BROOKHAVEN, SMITHTOWN, RIVERHEAD, SOUTHAMPTON, SOUTHOLD AND EAST HAMPTON, as
indicated on maps located at the offices listed below.
BI-WEEKLY GROUND INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS FOR LARVAL CONTROL
Aquabac (Bti), Vectobac (Bti), B.t.i. briquets (Bti), Spheratax (Bacillus sphaericus) , VectoPrime (Bti + methoprene) or Altosid (methoprene) will be
applied by ground application equipment (hydraulic sprayers, mist blowers, granular blowers, ultra low volume equipment) once approximately
every one to two weeks in approximately 2000 mosquito breeding sites located in the TOWNS OF BABYLON, ISLIP, BROOKHAVEN, SMITHTOWN,
SOUTHAMPTON, EAST HAMPTON, SHELTER ISLAND, SOUTHOLD (including Fishers Island), RIVERHEAD AND HUNTINGTON. These insecticides
may also be applied by air or ground application equipment to other mosquito breeding sites in response to surveys or complaints, ONLY WHERE
THE PRESENCE OF LARVAE is verifi ed as indicated on maps located at the offices listed below. Artifi cial containers will also be treated, as
required, for disease control.
GROUND APPLICATION FOR ADULT MOSQUITO CONTROL
Anvil, Duet or Scourge will be applied by ground application equipment (portable fog or truck mounted ultra low volume equipment) in various
locations in the County at any time during May 28 through October 25, 2019. Applications are made in response to resident complaints, in areas
where County monitored New Jersey light traps show excessive numbers or in response to other surveillance such as landing rates. Applications
may also be required in response to the presence of mosquito-borne pathogens such as West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
AERIAL APPLICATION FOR ADULT MOSQUITO CONTROL
Anvil or Duet will be applied occasionally (approximately 0-10 times per year) to control adult mosquitoes in areas that cannot be treated
otherwise. Special announcements will be made at least 48 hours prior to these applications on the County website, describing in detail the areas
to be treated. BEEKEEPERS SHOULD NOTIFY THE DIVISION OF VECTOR CONTROL OF THE LOCATION OF THEIR BEEHIVES. Insecticides used
for adult mosquito control can be highly toxic to bees.
